Corporate Plan and Climate Action Plan Supporting Document

 

The Oxfordshire Food Strategy supports the following key priorities and aims in the Corporate Plan and Climate Action Plan.

 

Corporate Plan

a.    PRN4: Recognise and support the vital role of farming in economic and ecosystem resilience, local food provision and the recovery of soils and natural processes.

b.    ACE1: Achieve our own zero carbon target by 2025 and support others to achieve the district target of zero carbon by 2030 – measures within ‘food for the planet’.

c.    ACE4: Promote and encourage behavioural change with informational campaigns and leading by example – measures ensuring campaigns and initiatives are supported.

d.    ACE6: Mitigate climate change through planning and land use, enhancing biodiversity on our own land and strengthening the planning system to enforce environmental standards – measures including improving access to land for community growing.

e.    ACE8: Support and encourage local businesses to respond to climate change and nature recovery – measures that support the local food economy and measures on institutional procurement.

f.     ACE9: Promote waste minimisation initiatives such as Repair Cafés – measures on cutting food waste.

g.    ECW1: Partner with regional agencies to ensure economic recovery, quality employment, thriving businesses and vibrant communities, avoiding the blight of “dormitory towns” – measures to support local sustainable food businesses and measures to support community within the ‘Good Food Movement’ element of the strategy.

h.    ECW2: Provide advice on access to grants, training and diversification programmes, helping local businesses to build agility and resilience – measures to support local sustainable food businesses.

i.      ECW5: Use our planning powers to preserve our valuable green spaces, particularly in urban areas – measures including improving access to land for community growing. 

j.      ACE6: Mitigate climate change through planning and land use, enhancing biodiversity on our own land and strengthening the planning system to enforce environmental standards – measures including improving access to land for community growing. 

k.    HILN9: Spatial planning embeds public health, wellbeing and sustainability - measures including improving access to land for community growing and improving the link between people and the food they eat.

 

Climate Action Plan

a.    OP12: Partner with Good Food Oxfordshire to support their Good Food Strategy for Oxfordshire, ensuring climate considerations are included throughout the strategy.

 

b.    C8: Include in Community Employment Plans considerations for addressing the council’s climate neutral targets through commitments such as green skills training, sourcing through a local and sustainable supply chain, supporting local social enterprises and charities and accessing local employment.

 

c.    OP7: Use our membership of Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (OxLEP) to ensure rapid growth of the green economy – measures that promote economic growth in climate conscious areas.

 

d.    OP2: Identify areas in our community that are most vulnerable to the effects of climate change to ensure they are properly supported and protected to promote wider community wellbeing.
